Doppler Effect
A moving source of sound is observed by a stationary observer. As the sound source moves the wavelength of the waves in front reduce, and the wave lengths of the waves behind increase.

Light from galaxies can be analysed as it passes through a diffraction grating. The spectral lines were shifter towards the red end of the spectrum. Red shift of the lines is because distant galaxies are moving away from earth at very high speeds.
