Physics 1A - Energy: Convection

?
Convection happens only in two states of matter. Which two?
Liquids and Gases.
1 of 8
When does convection happen?
Convection happens when the particles with the most energy move from the hotter place to the cooler place and take their heat energy with them.
2 of 8
What is condensation?
Condensation is when gas turns to liquid.
3 of 8
Describe condensation.
When a gas cools, the particles in the gas slow down and lose energy. The attractive forces pull them together, if the particles get close enough together condensation will happen.
4 of 8
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is when liquid turns to gas.
5 of 8
Describe evaporation.
Evaporation is when particles escape a liquid. Particles near the surface can become gas particles if: The particles are travelling in the right direction and they have enough energy. The particles with the most energy are most likely to evaporate.
6 of 8
The rate of evaporation will be faster if... (Name four things.)
The temperature of the liquid is higher. Density is lower. Surface area is larger. Airflow over the liquid is greater.
7 of 8
The rate of condensation will be faster if... (Name two things.)
Temperature of the surface the gas touches is lower. Surface area of the surface the gas touches is larger.
