Physics 1 - 1.6

?
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas.
1 of 8
Why does evaporation take place?
Because the most energetic liquid molecules escape from the liquid's surface and enter the air. Therefore, the average kinetic energy of the remaining molecules is less, so the temperature of the liquid decreases.
2 of 8
What does this mean?
This means that evaporation causes cooling.
3 of 8
How is the rate of evaporation increased?
By increasing the surface area of the liquid, by increasing the temperature of the liquid, by creating a draught of air across the liquid's surface.
4 of 8
What is condensation?
Condensation is when a gas turns into a liquid.
5 of 8
When does condensation occur?
Often on cold surfaces such as windows and mirrors.
6 of 8
How is the rate of condensation increased?
By increasing the surface area. By reducing the surface temperature.
7 of 8
What are the key words for this topic?
Evaporation, temperature, condensation.
