Name three ways heat can be transfered.
Radiation, conduction and convection.
1 of 15
What is heat radiation?
The transfter of heat energy by infrared radiation.
2 of 15
Conduction and convection involve the transfer of energy by .......
Particles.
3 of 15
What type of surface absorbs infrared radiation the best?
Dark, matt surfaces.
4 of 15
What type of surface reflects infrared radiation the best?
Light, shiny surfaces.
5 of 15
How do solar hot water panels work?
They contain water pipes under a black surface. The radiation from the sun is absorbed by the black surface to heat the water in the pipes. This water can be used for washing or pumped to radiators to heat the building.
6 of 15
Properties of a solid.
Strong attractive forces to hold the particles close together in a fixed, regular arrangement. The particles dont have much energy so they can only vibrate about their fixed position.
7 of 15
Properties of a liquid.
Weaker attractive forces between the particles. Particles are close together, but can move past eachother, and form an irregular arrangement. Have more energy than particles in a solid. Move in random directions at low speeds.
8 of 15
Properties of gases.
Almost no attractive forces between the particles. Particles have more energy than in solids and liquids. Move freely, and travel in random directions at high speeds.
9 of 15
Where does conduction mainly occur?
In solids.
10 of 15
What is conduction of heat energy?
Vibrating particles pass on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles.
11 of 15
Why are metals good conductors?
Because of their free electrons.
12 of 15
Where does convection occur?
In gases and liquids.
13 of 15
What is convection?
When the more energetic particles move from a hotter region to a colder region, taking their heat energy with them.
14 of 15
Explain what happens in an immersion heater.
Heat energy transferred from heater coils to water by conduction. Particles near coils-more energy, start moving faster. Water expands+becomes less dense. Hot water rises above cold water + displaces it, making it sink. End up with convection current.
