Conserving energy
Objects give out and take in heat energy all the time. The hotter the object, the more heat energy it gives out.
1 of 10
What is the difference between heat energy and temperature?
Heat is a form of energy. Temperature is a measure of the average energy of the particles rather than the total heat energy.
2 of 10
Why do things feel cold to your hand?
Because, the heat is rushing away from your hand. Heat travels from a hot region to a cold region.
3 of 10
How is energy transferred by conduction?
Heating the particles at one end of a solid, transfers the energy to the nearby particles and they vibrate on the spot. They bump into each other, transferring energy and vibrating more. They then bump into particles further along.
4 of 10
The difference between a thermal insulator and a thermal conductor?
A thermal insulator traps the heat. these are things such as carpets and wooly jumpers. They are made from padded material that trap heat between its fibres. A thermal conductor is something that conducts heat. These are saucepans and metals.

What is convection?
The rising of warm air through colder air is called convection. Warmth heats the air above< and this warm air rises. Colder air takes its place where it is heated.

Convection in a liquid
The water near the heat gets hot and expands because the particles move faster and get further apart. The water becomes less dense so it rises. Cooler, denser water moves to take its place. This water gets heated and so on.

Reducing energy transfer
A vacuum (thermos) flask is designed to keep a hot drink hot or ice cream cool. It reduces energy transfer to of from the air outside by conduction, convection and radiation. Emperor penguins huddle to keep warm.

What is a vacuum?
A vacuum has no particles in it of any kind. The shiny silver surface reflects infrared radiation.

What is a Sankey Diagram?
They show all the energy transfers taking place in a process. The thicker the arrow, the greater the amount of energy transferred.
