Name all the planets in our solar system
mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune
1 of 20
What is a Nebula?
a cloud of gas and dust coming from an exploded star.
2 of 20
what is the distance travelled by light in one year called?
a light year
3 of 20
In which galaxy is the Solar System found?
the milky way
4 of 20
Name the 4 pieces of evidence that supports the theory of the Big Bang?
redshift, age of old star, and the elements in the universe and cosmic microwave background radiation.
5 of 20
What is a galaxy?
a collection of stars
6 of 20
How old is the sun?
5000 million years old
7 of 20
What is the universe?
all matter and energy, including the earth, the galaxies and the contents of intergalactic space regarded as a whole.
8 of 20
What is the most common element?
Hydrogen
9 of 20
Name an example of Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous rock.
sandstone, marble and granite.
10 of 20
Name 3 different types of waves
microwaves, x-rays, visible light, tidal, infrared, gamma waves, UV.
11 of 20
Name the 2 types of waves
Transverse and longitudinal
12 of 20
an example of a transverse wave.
all electromagnetic waves- water waves.
13 of 20
an example of a longitudinal wave
sound waves
14 of 20
explain why lower layers within the rock must be older.
layers must have formed over time, the lowest layers must have formed first to be at the bottom, meaning they are the oldest.
15 of 20
state what would happen to the wavelength if the frequency increased while the speed stayed the same.
it would get smaller/decrease
16 of 20
describe the relationship betweeen the speed of distant galaxies and their distance away.
the faster the distant galaxy, the further away it is.
17 of 20
what is an earthquake?
a release of energyas vibrations or seismic waves when 2 plates cause friction to allow energy to build up.
18 of 20
Name some reasons why Wegner had the theory of continental drift?
pangaea, geometric fit, fossils, rock types.
19 of 20
what is the name of the instrument used to detect earthquakes?
a seismometer.
