Physics Unit 4 - Electric fields

?
What is an electric field?
A region of space which will produce a force on a charged particle
1 of 13
When will a charged particle experience a force?
In an electric field
2 of 13
If the electric field lines are close together, is the field strong or weak?
Strong
3 of 13
What are the 2 units for the electric field strength?
NC^-1 and Vm^-1
4 of 13
How can you investigate an electric field?
Using a power supply to provide a p.d and caster oil with floating semolina to show the field lines
5 of 13
As you move through an electric field, what changes?
The electric potential
6 of 13
What direction does an electric field travel?
Positive to negative
7 of 13
Where is charge particularly concentrated?
In regions around spikes or points on charged objects
8 of 13
What is the permittivity of free space?
A measure of how easy it is for the electric field to travel through space
9 of 13
How can you investigate coulombs law?
Using an electric balance. Charge a pair of insulated spheres, clamp them close together, causes a force. Adjust the distance. Inverse square law
10 of 13
What is an electron volt?
A unit of energy equal to the work done on an electron in accelerating it through a p.d of 1 volt
11 of 13
What is the charge of an alpha particle?
Twice the charge of an electron
12 of 13
Explain what happens when an electron starts to approach the speed of light?
The kinetic energy increases, but it is the mass that increases not the speed
