What is temperature?
How hot or cold something is.
1 of 21
What is temperature measured in?
Degrees Celsius
2 of 21
What happens if water is not pure?
It lowers the boiling point, usually 90-95
3 of 21
Heat is measured in joules what does this tell us?
It tells us the temperature and the more heat the more energy.
4 of 21
Explain the conduction in metals?
Once the heat is starting to be conducted the metal (solid) the particles touch each other. The heat is passed from particle to particle and as they are passed they gain more energy so the more heat the more energy. This is called conduction.
5 of 21
Does Heat transfer conduction happen in Solids, liquids or gases?
Only in solids.
6 of 21
Who won the metal rod experiment and why?
Copper won because it was a good source of conduction and passes quicker, it's also used for electrical current.
7 of 21
What happened during the experiment?
When we heated the metal rod, the particles gained more energy. This meant they vibrated and bumped into each other more. Whilst they bumped into each other they passed some of their energy which meant the thermal energy moved through the rod.
8 of 21
What happens when you have fewer particles?
Fewer particles means they are less dense and push each other away; fewer particles in the same volume.
9 of 21
What happens if there are more particles?
More particles, more dense.
10 of 21
Which of these occur in convection, Solid, liquid or gas?
Liquids and gases.
11 of 21
What is the process of convection?
Convection occurs when particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy. Heat energy is transferred from hot places to cooler places by convection. Liquids and gases expand when heated
12 of 21
What is infrared radiation and what are the effects?
A type of electromagnet radiation, infrared cameras show how hot or cold something is. The more hotter an object is the more infrared radiation it emits.
13 of 21
What do the colours show?
Since infrared cameras detect heat energy you can see colours that show how hot or cold something is. White is really hot, yellow is the warmest, purple cool and ice is black.
14 of 21
What are the renewable energy sources?
Solar (sun) power, wind power, wave power, Geothermal, Hydro electric power (H.E.P), Bio fuel (Biomass)
15 of 21
What are the non renewable energy sources?
Nuclear (uranium), (coal, gas crude oil)
16 of 21
What are the steps to a nuclear power station?
1)The water is turned into steam by a fuel that heats it(coal, gas, oil, nuclear, wood). 2)The steam rises because it is less dense (convection). 3)As the steam rises it turns the turbine.4)Dynamo generator generates electricity.5)Electricity sent to hom
17 of 21
What does carbon dioxide cause?
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which causes global warming.
18 of 21
What are the 3 fossil fuels?
Coal, oil and gas.
19 of 21
How was coal formed?
Coal:300 millions ago the dead plants fell into the swamp water. The mud stopped them rotting away. The mud piled up and squashed the plants. After millions of years under pressure, the mud became rock and the plants became coal.
20 of 21
How was oil and natural gas formed formed?
When the animals that lived in the sea died they fell into the mud and sand at the bottom. After millions of years they get buried deeper and the pressure changes turning the mud and sand into rock, the dead animals turned into crude oil, natural gas
