Physics P3 3.3 Electromagnetic induction.

?
What is electromagnetic induction?
The process of creating a potential difference using a magnetic field.
1 of 10
What happens when a conductor cuts the lines of a magnetic field?
A potential difference (pd) is induced across the ends of the conductor.
2 of 10
What needs to be done when an electromagnet is used?
It needs to be switched on or off to induce a potential difference (pd).
3 of 10
What happens if a magnet is moved into a coil of wire?
A potential difference (pd) is induced across the ends of the coil, this process is called electromagnetic induction. If the wire or coil is part of a complete circuit, a current passes through it.
4 of 10
How is the direction of the induced potential difference (pd) reversed?
If the direction of movement of the wire or coil is reversed, or the polarity of the magnet is reversed. A potential difference (pd) is only induced while there is movement.
5 of 10
How can the size of the induced potential difference (pd) increased?
By increasing the speed of movement, increasing the strength of the magnetic field, increasing the number of turns on the coil.
6 of 10
Why is there no potential difference induced when a bar magnet is held stationary inside a coil of wire?
The stationary bar magnet is not cutting any magnetic field lines.
7 of 10
What is the effect on the induced potential difference (pd) of reversing the direction of the current in a conductor curling magnetic field lines?
The direction of the induced potential difference (pd) is reversed.
8 of 10
**REMEMBER A POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE IS INDUCED ONLY WHEN THE WIRE OR COIL AND THE MAGNETIC FIELD MOVE RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER**
**LOOK UP DIAGRAM OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION**
9 of 10
**IF UNSURE LOOK UP VIDEOS**
**POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE MAY BE SHOWN AS pd**
