Physics P3 2.7 The pendulum.

?
What does the time period of a simple pendulum depend on?
The time period of a simple pendulum depends only on its length and increases as its length increases.
1 of 18
How can we measure the time period of a pendulum?
We can measure the average time for 20 oscillations and divide the timing by 20.
2 of 18
What stops a playground swing from oscillating if it is not pushed repeatedly?
Friction at the top of the playground swing and air resistance.
3 of 18
What is a pendulum moving to and fro along the same line an example of?
Oscillating motion.
4 of 18
What does a simple pendulum consist of?
A mass, called a bob, suspended on the end of a string.
5 of 18
How does a simple pendulum work?
When the bob is displaced to one side and let go, the pendulum oscillates back and forth, through the equilibrium position.
6 of 18
What is the equilibrium position of a pendulum?
The equilibrium position is the position of the pendulum when it stops moving.
7 of 18
What is the distance from the equilibrium position to the highest position on either side?
The amplitude of the oscillation.
8 of 18
What is the time period of the oscillation of a pendulum?
The time taken for one complete cycle from the highest position on one side to the highest position on the other side and back to the start position or the time taken between successive passes in the same direction through the equilibrium position.
9 of 18
What is the frequency of the oscillations?
The number of complete cycles of oscillation per second.
10 of 18
Through what equation is the time period and frequency related?
T = 1 over f (look up).
11 of 18
In the equation in which time period and frequency are related, what is T?
The time period in seconds (s).
12 of 18
In the equation in which time period and frequency are related, what is f?
The frequency in hertz (Hz).
13 of 18
What is the time period of a pendulum that completes 20 oscillations in 5.0 seconds?
There are 20.0 over 5.0 = 4.0 oscillation in 1 second, so the frequency is 4.0Hz. T = 1 over f, therefore T = 1 0ver 4.0Hz, therefore T = 0.25s. Therefore the time period is 0.25 seconds.
14 of 18
What happens to a playground swing if it is not pushed repeatedly and why?
The swing will come to rest because energy is transferred due to friction at the top of the wind and air resistance.
15 of 18
What does the time period of a simple pendulum depend on?
The length of the string.
16 of 18
What is the time period of pendulum of frequency 10Hz?
0.1s.
