Physics P2 7.3 Nuclear issues.

?
What is radon gas?
It is an (look up symbol but looks like (X joined)-emitting isotope that seeps into houses in certain areas through the ground.
1 of 11
How is nuclear waste stored?
It is stored in sage and secure conditions for many years after unused uranium and plutonium (to be used in the future ) is removed from it.
2 of 11
What is the major source of background radiation?
Radon gas which seeps through the ground from radioactive substances in rocks deep underground.
3 of 11
What does radon gas emit and how is this an issue?
Alpha particles, so it is a health hazard if breathed in.
4 of 11
Apart from radon gas, what other sources of background radiation are there?
Cosmic rays from outer space, food and drink, air travel, medical sources and nuclear weapons testing.
5 of 11
Why are there medical sources of background radiation?
Some equipment such as X-rays have an ionising effect, as well as radioactive substances.
6 of 11
What happens to radioactive waste?
Uranium and plutonium are chemically removed from used fuel rods from nuclear reactors as these can be used again. The remaining radioactive waste must be stored in secure conditions for many years.
7 of 11
What is done to reduce employee's exposure to nuclear radiation?
They keep as far away as possible from sources of radiation, they spend as little time exposed as possible and shield themselves with materials such as concrete and lead.
8 of 11
What is the major source of background radiation?
Radon gas.
9 of 11
Why must radioactive waste be stored securely?
So that it does not enter the environment because it remains radioactive.
10 of 11
What happened in Chernobyl?
Nuclear reactors exploded, there are thousands of fission reactors safely in use throughout the world but none of them are the same type as the ones used in the Chernobyl disaster.
