Physics P2

?
Two charged materials are bought next to each other; they repel. Why?
Two charged materials repel each other because they have the same type of charge.
1 of 13
Give an example of one occurrence of static electricity.
Lighting / Shocks from car door / Balloon stuck to a wall.
2 of 13
How do you measure 'potential difference'?
Using a voltmeter in parallel with a component.
3 of 13
How is a thermistor different from a fixed resistor?
A fixed resistor has a constant resistance. A thermistor's resistance decreases as the temperature increases.
4 of 13
How do crumple zones in the structure of a car help to reduce injuries to passengers?
Crumple zones absorb kinetic energy which means it takes longer for the car to stop; this reduces the force on the passengers.
5 of 13
What is the meaning of an 'isotope'?
Isotopes are the atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons. They have the same proton number, but different mass numbers.
6 of 13
An isotope of Oxygen has a mass number of 17 and an atomic number of 8. How many electrons and how many neutrons does the atom have?
The isotope has 8 electrons and 9 neutrons.
7 of 13
Which type of nuclear radiation has the least ionising power?
Gamma has the least ionising power.
8 of 13
Which type of nuclear radiation is stopped by a thin sheet of paper?
Alpha radiation is stopped by a thin piece of paper.
9 of 13
Which type of nuclear radiation has a positive charge?
Alpha and β+ (positron) radiation has a positive charge.
10 of 13
Why can the refuelling of an aircraft be dangerous and how can the danger be prevented?
Refuelling an aircraft can be dangerous as fuel can gain electrons from the fuel pipe. The pipe gets a +ve charge & the fuel gets a -ve charge. P.d could cause a spark & ignite the fuel; to prevent this, the plane should be earthed with copper *****.
11 of 13
Define "potential difference" in terms of energy.
Potential energy is the energy transferred per unit of charge.
12 of 13
What happens to the forces acting on a skydiver after they open their parachute?
Air resistance( greater than the weight of the skydiver) increases on the parachute. Speed and air resistance then decrease until the air resistance is equal to the weight of the skydiver.
