Physics P2 3.6 Impact forces.

?
What does the force of the impact when vehicles collide depend on?
The mass, change of velocity and the duration o the impact.
1 of 11
What happens when two vehicles collide?
They exert equal and opposite forces on each other and their total momentum is unchanged.
2 of 11
What happens to the momentum of an object when a force acts on that object that is able to move or is moving it?
Its momentum changes.
3 of 11
How does the length of time taken for a particular change relate to the the force that acts?
For a particular change in momentum the longer the time taken for the change, the smaller the force that acts.
4 of 11
How does the impact time relate to the force on an object?
If the impact time is short, the forces on the object are large. As the impact time increases, the forces become less.
5 of 11
Wha does the momentum of an object in a collision often become?
Zero during the impact - the object comes to rest.
6 of 11
What do crumple zones in cars do?
Crumple zones in cars are designed to fold in a collision.
7 of 11
Why have crumple zones in cars?
They increase the impact time and so reduce the force on the car and the people in it.
8 of 11
What is impact time?
Time taken for a collision to take place.
9 of 11
Wh do cars have crumple zones at both the front and rear?
Cars may be hit from either the front or the rear, in either case the crumple zone reduces the forces on the car (or increases the impact time).
10 of 11
**MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN EXPLAIN HOW CRUMPLE ZONES IN CARS REDUCE THE FORCES ACTING BY INCREASING THE TIME TAKEN TO CHANGE THE MOMENTUM OF A CAR**
