What are the advantages and diadvantages of using photocells for electricity?
Advantages:Photocells have no moving parts so they are sturdy, low maintenance and last a long time. Solar power wont run out and it dose not pollute the atmosphere. Disadvantages: When there is no sunlight, there is no power.

How to wind turbines produce electricity?
Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy from the air into elctricity. The wind turns the blade which turns a generator.
2 of 24
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Wind power?
Advantages:Wind turbines are cheap to run, wind power is renewable so it will never run out. Disadvantages:They cause visual and noise pollution, it can be very expensive to set up, you need about 1500 wind turbines to replace a power station.
3 of 24
How does a power station work?
1)Fuel is used to produce heat which generates steam 2)The moving steam drives the blades of the turbine 3) This rotating movement from the turbine is converted to electricity by the generator.
4 of 24
What is electromagnetic induction?
The creationj of voltage in a wire which is experiencing a change in magnetic field.
5 of 24
What factor affect the voltage and current when using electromagnetic induction?
1) The strength of the magnet 2)The number of turns on the coil 3)The speed of movement
6 of 24
Why is a high voltage used to transmit electricity in the national grid?
It is cheaper to use as there is less wasted energy(it is more efficient)
7 of 24
How does the greenhouse effect keep the earth warm?
Energy from the sun is absorbed by the earth. The earth radiates heat which is absorbed by greenhouse gases and re- radiated in different directions. So the atmosphere acts as an insulating layer.
8 of 24
How are humans causing an increase in in the amount of greenhouse gases?
1) People are using more energy which we get from burning fossil fuels which releases more Carbon Dioxide 2) More trees are being chopped down so less Carbon Dioxide is being absorbed.
9 of 24
Name one natrual and human cause of temperature change.
Human: Soot and gases produced by factories can reflect heat from cities back down to earth, which can cause an increase in local temperatures Natural: Ash from volacanoes can reflect radiation away from earth causing the earth to cool down
10 of 24
Nmae the three types of radiation and describe their ionising powers
Alpha(Strongly ionising) Beta(Moderately ionising) Gamma rays(weakly ionising)
11 of 24
Name a use of Alpha, Beta and Gamma radiation.
Alpha(Smoke detectors) Beta(Medical tracers and thickness gauges) Gamma(Sterilising medical instruments)
12 of 24
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Nuclear power?
Advantages: Nuclear power stations do not release a lot of carbon dioxide. Nuclear fuel is relatively cheap. There is still a lot of uranium left in the ground Disadvantages: Nuclear power stations are expensive to build and maintain.
13 of 24
What precautions should you take when handling radioactive materials?
1)Never allow it to touch your skin 2)Always where a lead lined suit to protect against gamma radiation in highly radioactive areas 3)Dont look directly at it and keep it as far away as possible.
14 of 24
Why is radioactive waste so difficult dispose of Safely?
Radioactive waste stays active for tens of thousands of years so they are buried deep underground. However it is hard to find suitable places to put waste because 1)People nearby object 2) The site has to be geologically stable.
15 of 24
What shape are the orbits of the planets in the solar system?
Circular or eliptical
16 of 24
What force keeps planets in their orbits?
Gravity
17 of 24
How is an asteroid different to a meteorite?
Asteroids are rocks that stay in their orbit. Meteorites are rocks that have crashes down to earth.
18 of 24
What are comets?
Comets are balls of rocks, dust and ice which orbit the Sunin very elongated ellipses, often in different planes from the planets.
19 of 24
Describe the evidence that led scientists to believe that the moon may be the result of another planet colliding with earth.
1) The moon has a lower density than the earth and dosnt have a big iron core, whereas earth does 2)Moon rocks contain few substances which evaporate at low temperatures- suggesting the moon was formed from hot material.
20 of 24
What is a light year?
A light year is the distance that light travels through a vacuum(like space) in one year.
21 of 24
Describe the problems of sending a group of astronauts to Mars
1)The space craft would have to carry a lot of fuel which is expensive. 2)You would have to carry a lot of fuel and oxygen. 3)long periods in low gravity causes muscle wastage and loss of bone tissue.
22 of 24
What are the advantages of unmannes probes?
1)They can withstand conditions humans cant. 2) They are cheaper 3) More instruments can be fitted as there is less people so more space.
23 of 24
What type of radiation is found everywhere in the universe?
Microwave radiation
