Physics P2 2.7 Force and speed issues.

?
How can fuel economy road vehicles be improved?
By reducing the speed or fitting a wind deflector.
1 of 13
How do average speed cameras work?
They are linked in pairs and measure the average speed of a vehicle.
2 of 13
What do anti-skid surfaces do?
Increase the friction between a car tyre and the road surface, reducing skids or even preventing skids altogether.
3 of 13
What is the amount of fuel a vehicle uses to travel a particular distance?
Fuel economy (fuel economy is improved by a reduction in the amount of fuel required).
4 of 13
How does fitting a wind deflector improve fuel economy?
It reduces the air resistance by making the vehicle more streamlined.
5 of 13
Why are speed cameras used?
To discourage motorists from speeding.
6 of 13
What happens if motorists are caught speeding?
They are fined and may even lose their driving licence.
7 of 13
How does skidding happen?
Skidding happens when the brakes on a vehicle are applied too harshly.
8 of 13
Wha happens when a vehicle skids?
The wheels lock and slide along the road surface, increasing the stopping distance.
9 of 13
How do anti-skid surfaces reduce or prevent skidding
They are rougher than normal road surfaces, increasing the friction between the vehicle tyres and the road.
10 of 13
Where are anti-skid surfaces used?
They are used in places where drivers are likely to brake, such as near traffic lights and road junctions.
11 of 13
Why des making a vehicle more streamlined improve fuel economy?
Less engine force and less power are needed to maintain a certain speed, less fuel is needed so fuel costs are reduced.
12 of 13
When a vehicle is travelling along a straight road at a steady speed what can you say about the engine force and the air resistance?
The vehicle is not accelerating so the resultant force on it is zero, so the engine force and the air resistance are balanced.
