Physics P2 2.5 Falling objects.

?
What is the weight of an object?
The force of gravity on it.
1 of 19
What is he mass of an object?
The quantity of matter in it.
2 of 19
What does an object acted on only by gravity accelerate at?
About 10 m/s^2.
3 of 19
What is the terminal velocity of a falling object?
The velocity it reaches when it is falling in a fluid, the weight is then equal to the drag force on the object.
4 of 19
What is the resultant force acting on an object that falls freely?
The force of gravity.
5 of 19
What does the force of gravity do?
It will make an object close to the Earth's surface accelerate at about 10 m/s^2.
6 of 19
What do we call the force of gravity of an object?
Weight.
7 of 19
What do we call the acceleration of an object that is falling freely?
The acceleration due to gravity.
8 of 19
What is the equation for the force of gravity?
W = m x g.
9 of 19
In the equation for the force of gravity, what is W?
The weight in newtons (N).
10 of 19
In the equation for the force of gravity, what is m?
The mass in kilograms (kg).
11 of 19
In the equation for the force of gravity, what is g?
The acceleration due to gravity in m/s^2.
12 of 19
If the object is on the Earth and not falling in the equation for the force of gravity, what is g called and what are the unity?
g is called the gravitational field strength and its units are newtons per kilogram (N/kg).
13 of 19
What happens when an object falls through a fluid?
Fluid exerts drag force on the object resisting its motion. The faster it falls the bigger the drag force gets until eventually it is equal to the weight of the object. Resultant force is zero so acceleration stops and it moves at a constant velocity
14 of 19
What is it called when the resultant force of an object falling through fluid becomes zero and it stops accelerating?
The terminal velocity.
15 of 19
Why dos an object dropped in a fluid initially accelerate?
There is a resultant force acting on it.
16 of 19
What eventually happens to an object falling in a fluid?
It will reach a terminal velocity because the resultant force becomes zero.

**DO NOT CONFUSE MASS AND WEIGHT. MASS IS THE AMOUNT OF MATTER IN AN OBJECT AND WEIGHT IS THE FORCE OF GRAVITY ACTING ON IT**
**THE DRAG FORCE MAY ALSO BE CALLED AIR RESISTANCE OR FLUID RESISTANCE**
