Physics P1 5.1 The nature of waves.

?
How do we use waves?
To transfer energy and to transfer information.
1 of 17
What are transverse waves?
Waves that vibrate at right angles to the direction of energy transfer.
2 of 17
What kind of waves are all electromagnetic waves?
Transverse waves.
3 of 17
What are longitudinal waves?
Waves that vibrate parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
4 of 17
What kind of energy wave is a longitudinal wave?
A sound wave.
5 of 17
What are mechanical waves?
Waves that need a medium (substance) to travel through, may be either transverse or longitudinal waves.
6 of 17
What is the direction of the travel of the wave the same as?
The direction in which the wave travels.
7 of 17
What is the vibration of a wave called?
The oscillation.
8 of 17
What is the oscillation (vibration) of the particles of a transverse wave?
For a transverse wave the oscillation of the particles is perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction in which the wave travels.
9 of 17
What is the oscillation of the particles of a longitudinal wave?
The oscillation of the particles of a longitudinal wave is parallel to the direction of travel of the wave.
10 of 17
What is a longitudinal wave made up of?
Compressions and rarefactions.
11 of 17
What are electromagnetic waves in detail?
Waves that are oscillations in electric and magnetic fields (no particles involved), oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave, therefore they are transverse waves, e.g: light/radio waves and can travel through a vacuum.
12 of 17
What are mechanical waves in detail?
Waves that travel through a medium (substance), they may be transverse or longitudinal, examples are waves on springs and sound waves.
13 of 17
What is the oscillation of sound waves?
They are longitudinal waves so therefore the oscillation (vibration) of a sound wave is parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
14 of 17
When a longitudinal wave passes through air, what happens to the air particles at a compression?
They are pushed closer together.
15 of 17
What type of wave can be produced on a stretched string?
Transverse, mechanical waves.

** IF YOU ARE ASKED TO SHOW WHAT IS MEANT BY LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE WAVES YOU MAY FIND IT HELPS TO DRAW AND LABEL DIAGRAMS TO SHOW**
**LOOK UP DIAGRAMS OF LONGITUDINAL WAVES ON A SLINKY AND OTHER WAVES***
