Physics P1 1.6 Evaporation and condensation.

?
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is when a liquid turns into a gas.
1 of 9
What is condensation?
Condensation is when a gas turns into a liquid.
2 of 9
Why does evaporation take place?
Because the most energetic liquid molecules escape from the liquid's surface and enter the air, therefore the average kinetic energy of the remaining molecules is less and so the temperature of the liquid decreases, meaning evaporation causes cooling
3 of 9
How is the rate of evaporation increased?
By increasing the surface area of the liquid, increasing the temperature of the liquid and creating a draught of air across the liquid's surface.
4 of 9
Where does condensation usually take place?
On cold surfaces such as windows and mirrors.
5 of 9
How is the rate of condensation increased?
By increasing the surface area and reducing the surface temperature.
6 of 9
What effect would decreasing the surface area of a liquid have on its rate of evaporation?
Decreasing the surface area of a liquid would decrease the rate of evaporation.
7 of 9
What effect would decreasing the surface area of a liquid have on its rate of condensation?
Decreasing the surface area would decrease the rate of condensation.
