What is the centre of mass of an object?
Where its mass can be thought to be concentrated
1 of 18
When on object is freely suspended, where will it come to rest?
With its centre of mass directly below the point of suspension. The object is then in equilibrium.
2 of 18
For a symmetrical object, where is its centre of mass?
Along the axis of symmetry
3 of 18
What is oscillating motion?
Motion of any object that moves to and fro along the same line
4 of 18
On a simple pendulum, the bob oscillates back and forth through which position?
The equilibrium position
5 of 18
What is the amplitude of the oscillation?
The distance from the equilibrium position to the highest position on either side
6 of 18
What is the time period of the oscillation?
The time taken for one complete cycle
7 of 18
What does the time period of a simple pendulum depend on?
The length of the pendulum and increases as the length increases
8 of 18
What is the frequency of the oscillations?
The number of complete cycles of oscillation per second
9 of 18
What is the moment of a force?
The turning effect of a force
10 of 18
How can we increase the moment of a force?
1) The force being applied must increase and/or 2) The distance to the pivot must increase
11 of 18
When will an object tend to topple over?
When the line of action of the weight lies outside the base of the object
12 of 18
How can we increase the stability of an object?
By making its base as wide as possible therefore the centre of mass is lower and it has further to tilt before the line of action of the weight moves outside the base
13 of 18
What is centripetal acceleration?
The acceleration towards the centre of the circle of an object that is moving round the circle
14 of 18
What is centripetal force?
The resultant force that causes the centripetal acceleration of an object moving round a cirlce
15 of 18
What does the centripetal force on an object depend on?
Its mass, speed and radius of the circle
16 of 18
What properties of a liquid make it useful in a hydraulic system?
They are virtually incompressible and the pressure in a liquid is transmitted equally in all directions
17 of 18
What does the force exerted by a hydraulic pressure system depend on?
The force exerted on the system, the area of the cylinder which this force acts on and the area of the cylinder that exerts the force
