Physics (Chapter 1)

?
What are the different ENERGY STORES ?
Thermal, Kinetic, Gravitational Potential, Elastic Potential, Chemical, Magnetic, Electrostatic, Nuclear
1 of 11
What is a SYSTEM ?
A single object (air in a piston) or a group of objects (two colliding vehicles) that you're interested in. When a SYSTEM changes energy is transferred wither into or away from the SYSTEM, between different objects in the SYSTEM or energy stores
2 of 11
How is enegry transferred by HEATING ?
Water (system) the kettles heating element transfers energy to the water into the waters thermal energy store (2 object system water and heating element)
3 of 11
What is WORK DONE ?
Another way of saying energy transferred, can be done when current flows (work is done against resistance ina circuit) or by a force moving an object.
4 of 11
What is the equation for WORK DONE ?
WORK DONE= FORCE (N) x DISTANCE (M) / W=Fs
5 of 11
What is KINETIC ENERGY ?
Anything that is moving has a KINETIC ENERGY store, enegry is transferred to this when the object speeds up, transferred away when it slows/stops
6 of 11
What is the equation for KINETIC ENERGY ?
KINETIC ENERGY (J) = 1/2 x MASS (kg) x SPEED (m/s) / E = 1/2mv
7 of 11
What is GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY ?
When lifting an object in a gravitational field work is required, this causes energy transfer to the G.P.E store of the object, the amounbt deoends on its MASS, HEIGHT, STRENGTH of the GF
8 of 11
What is the equation for GPE ?
GPE (J) = MASS (kg) x GFS (N/kg) x HEIGHT (m) / E = MGH
9 of 11
What is ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY ?
Stetching or squashing and object can transfer energy to EPE store, as long as the limit of proportionality has not been exceeded it can be found using the equation.
10 of 11
What is the equation for ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY ?
ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY (J) = 1/2 x SPRING CONSTANT (N/m) x EXTENSION (m) / E = 1/2ke
