?
What are optical fibres?
Optical fibres are used to send information in the form of pulses of light or infrared radiation.
1 of 14
What do optical fibres allow?
Optical fibres allow the rapid transmission of data necessary for modern day communications.
2 of 14
What is electromagnetic radiation used for?
Can be used to send information without optical fibres becuase it can be reflected and refracted in the same way as visible light this is also known as wireless technology.
3 of 14
What is wireless technology used in?
Radios mobile phones and laptop computers
4 of 14
What are the advantages of wireless technology.
Signals are available 24 hours a day no wiring is needed items can be portable and convenient.
5 of 14
Communication signals
Last century people use to communicate using morse code this was used to communicate over long distances this code uses long and short flashes of light to represent letters.
6 of 14
Light communications
Light used for communication is produced by a laser. A laser produces a narrow intense beam of light . Optical fibres are used to carry signals in binary code digital signals.
7 of 14
What do lasers proudce.
A laser produces a narrow beam of monochromatic single colour light.
8 of 14
What is electromagnetic radiation?
The amount of radiation such as infrared that is absorbed or emitted from a surface depends on the surface temperature.
9 of 14
What are the uses of electomagnetic radiation
Microwaves are used to heat stuff as well as satellite communication mobile phones and radar they a absorbed by water and fat molecules which cause them to heat up.
10 of 14
What are infrared Ray's used for?
They are used to heat materials in cooking and in remote controls they are used to heat the surface of the food in cooking also reflected off shiny surfaces also are absorbed by black objects.
11 of 14
What are Microwaves used for?
To transmit information over large distances that are in line of sight some areas aren't in line of sight some areas aren't in line of sight so they have poor signals which is why your mobile phone may cut out or fail to get a connection in areas.
12 of 14
What is Infrared radiation?
They are a type of electromagnetic wave. Infrared are used in remote controls for to short distance wireless data burgla alarm and security lights.
13 of 14
What are analogue signals used for
They are used to transmit data they are vary continuously in amplitude.
