Elastic
A material is behaving elastically if it returns to its original shape after being bent, stretched, twisted or compressed.

Plastic
A material is behaving plastically if it is permanently changed in shape after being deformed

Strong
This material which can withstand a large force without breaking

Brittle
A brittle material does not distort significantly before failure.Can be stuck back together as they have a clean fracture.

Does not break if bent or stretched a little

Ductile
Suffers considerable distortion before failure

Stress
the force acting per unit cross-sectional area of the area

strain
Fractional change in length of the material or the extension per unit length of material

Youngs modulas
Fraction stress divided by strain. Applies to a material within the region in which hookes law applies.

Crystalline solid
A solid consisting of a crystal or many crystals, usually arranged randomly. The molecular arrangement of such solids posses both short range and long range order.

Polymeric solid
These are often constructed from giant macro-molecules with many repeating atomic patterns in a long chain . as such they have good short range order but long range disorder.

Amorphous solids
These solids have atoms arranged such that there is only limited short range order and long range disorder.

Max load and extension which if removed , causes no permanent deformation of the sample

Limit of proportionality
max load for which extension is directly proportional to the load

Hookes law
extension is directly proportional to the load of the sample.
