What is an electromagnet?
An insulated wire wrapped round an iron bar which becomes magnetic when current is passed though it
1 of 9
What is a magnetic field?
The space around a magnet or a current-carrying wire
2 of 9
How can you show a magnetic field?
place a magnet in some iron fillings
3 of 9
How do you plot a magnetic field?
A bar magnet surrounded by compasses
4 of 9
How is an electromagnetic created?
A wire is placed around an iron core, current is then passed through it causing it to become magnetised
5 of 9
Name two uses for electromagnets
The scrapyard crane, circuit breaker, electric bell or The relay
6 of 9
How does a scrapyard crane work?
Scrap vehicles are lifted in a scrap yard powerful electromagnets attached to cranes. The steel frame of a vehicle sticks to the electromagnet when current passes through the coil of the electromagnet. When the currents is switched off, the frame off
7 of 9
How can you increase the size of the force in an electromagnet?
Have a stronger magnet/core, increase the size of the current
8 of 9
How does an electric bell work?
When the current flows through the circuit, the electromagnet makes a magnetic field. The electromagnet attracts the springy metal arm. The arm hits the gong, which makes a sound. The circuit is broken now the arm is out of position.
