Physical Landscape

?
Concordant Coastline
Bands of rock that vary in resistance and run parallel to the coastline
1 of 20
Discordant Coastline
Bands of rock that vary in resistance and run perpendicular (at right angles) to the coastline
2 of 20
Headland
Formed at a discordant coastlines and tend to stick out.
3 of 20
Bay
Formed at discordant coastlines
4 of 20
Weathering
The break down of rocks at or near to the surface of the ground
5 of 20
Rotational Slumping
Large areas of land that are moved leaving exposed rock.
6 of 20
Rock Falls
Fragments of rock that are eroded and weathered until they fall from the cliff
7 of 20
Soil creep
Gravity pulls the water contained in soil downwards, pulling soil with it.
8 of 20
Mudflow
Saturated soil and weak rock flow down a slope producing a fan shape - usually occurs when precipitation is heavy.
9 of 20
Traction
Large boulders that are rolled along the sea bed by water
10 of 20
Saltation
Smaller boulders are bounced along the sea bed
11 of 20
Suspension
Sand grains are carried suspended in the water, not touching the sea bed nor the surface
12 of 20
Solution
Calcium from limestone and chalk rocks dissolve and are carried in solution, barely visible to us.
13 of 20
Deposition
The laying down of materials
14 of 20
Joints
Small cracks in the rock
15 of 20
Faults
Large cracks in the rock
16 of 20
Hydraulic Action
The sheer weight and impact of water against the coastline will erode the coast. Waves compress air in cracks in the rock forcing them apart and weakening the rock.
17 of 20
Abrasion
Breaking waves throw sand and pebbles against the coast
18 of 20
Attrition
The rocks and pebbles carried by the waves rub together and break down into smaller pieces.
19 of 20
Solution
Chemical action by seawater on some rocks
