Farming/ Agriculture
wine-growing during summer temperatures and forestry due to Alpine trees easily being grown in the fertile soils of the lower- mid Alps. 10% of all French wines are now made in the Alps.

Winter- High snowfall rates so countless ski resorts. Attracts skiers and snowboarders who seek the the thrill of descending steep mountain ranges such as the Zube ski pass in Northern Italy. Summer - Picturesque lakes such as the Lake Bled.

Large amounts of lakes and moderate rainfall with high water levels of snow melt means its ideal for a reservoir to store water when levels are low. A turbine used to create a fast flowing current. Low pollution levels and no fossils burnt.

Problems of those living in the Alps
Poor soils and steep relief

Poor soils
At higher altitudes, snow melt leads to infertile soil, therefore farmers want to use the valley floor for farming where temperatures are milder and soil is more fertile. Rise in competition between farmers and tourist resorts in the area.

Steep relief
Limits communication and road building as it is difficult to build roads. Due to coldness, some roads are covered in ice and block roads bc of avalanches. settlements are difficult, population is low and people are ageing.

How can these problems be overcome?
Diversifying produce, Terracing, Transhumance farming, Investing tunnels through mountains; Advertising campaigns.

Diversifying produce
Many farmers have used grants from the EU and gov to create vineyards. 10% of all French wines are produces in the Alps. Although it takes up space on the lower slopes surrounding the valley floor, theyre popular for tourist attractions so income inc

Terracing
Steps can be cut into lower slopes that allow for rain water to trickle down and make it easier to farm on, so wide variety of crops can be grown, it does cause as much completion for space

Transhumance farming
Cattle are moved to higher up sloes in the summer when snow has melted and soil is more fertile. In the winter, brought back down and put into barns so they dont get into tourist use.

Investing in tunnels
Shortened journey time and allowing people to work and commute there, exporting and importing goods e.g. wine, helping the economy. Last year gotthard tunnel was completed costing 11 billion euros

Advertising campaigns
In Austria and Switzerland to encourage people of working age to move to the Alps and start up businesses. Qualities of the Alps such as scenery and the fresh air compared to cities
