Give 3 examples of biological processes in animals which require energy
muscle contraction, active transport, cell division,
1 of 14
Give 3 examples of biological processes in plants which require energy
photosynthesis, DNA replication, protien synthesis
2 of 14
What is photosynthesis?
The process where light energy is used to break apart the bonds in water molecules to release energy. - Hydrogen is combined with co2 to form glucose (where energy is stored until released through respiration) and oxygen is released into atmosphere
3 of 14
The overall equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O + energy = C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2
4 of 14
Plants and animal cells release energy from glucose through respiration, what are the two types of respiration?
1) Aerobic (with oxygen) 2)Anaerobic (without oxygen)
5 of 14
Overall equation of Anaerobic respiration
C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 = 6CO2 + H2O + energy (photosynthesis equation backwards)
6 of 14
A cell cant get its energy directly from glucose so during respiration the energy released from glucose is used to make what?
ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
7 of 14
What is ATP made from?
Nucleotide base (Adenine), combined witha ribose sugar and three (tri) phosphate groups
8 of 14
What is ATP synthesised from?
ADP + Inorganic phosphate - using energy from energy releasing reaction such as the breakdown of glucose in respiration
9 of 14
How is the energy stored/
As chemical energy (in the phosphate bond)
10 of 14
Which enzyme catalyses this reaction?
ATP synthase
11 of 14
What happens once ATP has diffused to the part of the cell that needs energy?
It is broken back down into ADP and phosphate. The chemical energy is then released from the phosphate bond and used by the cell
12 of 14
Which enzyme catalyses this reaction?
ATPase
13 of 14
What happens to the ADP and inorganic phosphate?
They are recycled and the process starts again
