What is photosynthesis?
the making of glucose using light
1 of 16
Where does photosynthesis happen?
Leaves are the main site. It occurs mainly in the mesophyll cells where there are lots of chloroplasts containing chlorophyll.
2 of 16
What happens during photosynthesis?
Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll (green substance found in chloroplasts).
3 of 16
How is Light energy used?
To convert carbon dioxide (from air) + water (from soil) into glucose
4 of 16
How do plants get carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide diffuses through the small holes in the underside of the leaf called stomata
5 of 16
Summary of Photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
6 of 16
Why is oxygen released?
As a By-product
7 of 16
Limiting Factors for photosynthesis
Temperature, Carbon dioxide and Light intensity (either one may be the factor that limits photosynthesis)
8 of 16
How is Temperature a limiting factor?
Low temperature → molecules would move less so the reaction happens slower.
9 of 16
How is Carbon dioxide a limiting factor?
Shortage of CO2 → fewer molecules are available for the reaction
10 of 16
How is Light intensity a limiting factor?
shortage of light → less energy to power the reaction
11 of 16
What happens if one of the limiting factors are close to its minimum value?
the rate of photosynthesis would be limited → increasing the factor would increase the rate
12 of 16
Why would the rate continue to increase until another factor is limiting?
Further increase of the original factor would not increase the rate
13 of 16
Why with no limiting factors increasing a factor above a certain level would not increase the rate?
All chlorophyll molecules are being used
14 of 16
How to test a plant for photosynthesis?
Test for starch using iodine. Any extra food a plant makes through photosynthesis is stored in its tissue as starch.
15 of 16
What colour does iodine turn in the presence of starch?
Blue - Black
