Where does photosynthesis happen?
Photosynthesis happens in the leaves of all green plants - this is what leaves are for.

Photosynthesis happens inside the chloroplasts. They contain chlorophyll, which absorbs energy in sunlight and uses it to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose. Oxygen is also produced as a by-product.
How are leaves adapted for efficient photosynthesis? (1)
1) Leaves are broad = there's a large surface area exposed to life. 2) Contain lots of chlorophyll in chloroplasts to absorb light.

3) Are full of little holes called stomata. They open and close to let gases like CO2 and O2 in and out. They also allow water vapour to escape - which is known as transpiration.

What is the rate of photosynthesis affected by?
The light intensity, the concentration of CO2 and the temperature.

What can these factors becoming and what does this mean?
They can become the limiting factor, which means that it's stopping photosynthesis from happening any faster.

What does a factor limiting at a particular time depend on?
The environmental conditions.

When are the factors the limiting factors?
- At night, light is the limiting factor. - In winter, temperature is often the limiting factor. - If it is warm enough and bright enough, the concentration of CO2 is usually the limiting factor.

Explain an experiment which can be done to work out the ideal conditions for photosynthesis in a particular plant. (1)
A water plant like Canadian pondweed can be used. The amount of oxygen produced in a given time can be easily measured, to show how photosynthesis is happening.

You could either count the bubbles given off or you collect the oxygen in a gas syringe, for more accuracy.
