What is meant by the term autotroph?
Can make organic molecules e.g. Carbohydrates, lipids from inorganic molecules like CO2 and H2O.
1 of 11
What is meant by the term heterotroph?
Can only use organic molecules e.g. Carbohydrates, lipids that are made by another organism.

What are photosynthetic pigments?
Absorb light, embedded in Thylakoid membrane, used in light dependent stage. Excite Electrons, different pigments absorb different wavelengths.
3 of 11
What is the difference between primary and accessory pigments?
Primary- reaction centre where Electrons get excited. Accessory - absorb different light wavelengths transfer energy to primary pigments. Primary- Chlorphyll A, P680,P700. Accessory- Chlorphyll B, Carotenoid.

How is light harvested in chloroplast membranes?
Photosystem absorb light energy. Electron excited. Energy passed from one pigment to another to reaction centre.range of accessory pigments allow many wavelengths to be absorbed.

What is the link between light dependent stage and light independent stage?
ATP and Reduced NADP from LDS used in

Name and describe the chemical pathway which fixes CO2 into hexose sugars.
Calvin Cycle. Carboxylation of RUBP, catalysed by Rubisco. GP formed, GP converted to TP using NADPH and ATP from LDS. Some of TP regenerated to RUBP, Some TP makes hexose sugars

What is meant by the term limiting factor?
Variable that limits rate of a particular process. Factor increase=Faster rate. Factor decrease= slower rate.
8 of 11
Suggest why the volume of O2 released doesn't give a true reflection of the photosynthesis rate.
Used for aerobic respiration, Oxygen dissolves in water, measures photolysis in LDS.
9 of 11
Suggest why the volume of CO2 used does not give a true reflection of the rate of photosynthesis.
Product of aerobic respiration. Only measured carboxylation of RUBP.
10 of 11
Describe how an investigation into the effect of light intensity in the rate of photosynthesis would be carried out
Use a photosynthometer. Plant gives off O2, bubbles trapped drawn into capillary tube by syringe, measure length of bubble after certain time. Repeat. Move lamp set distances. Use light meter to measure intensity, allow equilibrium. Dark room, temp.
