What is the reaction for Photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water --> Glucose + oxygen
1 of 15
What is the symbol equation for Photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 --> C6H1206 + 602
2 of 15
What happens to the rate of photosynthesis if the plant is kept in a shaded area?
If the plant is kept in a shaded area, there will be less light, meaning less chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, the rate of photosynthesis will drop.
3 of 15
Name and describe 4 characteristics of leaves that help photosynthesis.
1. Air spaces let CO2 get into the cells. 2. Broad leaves = large surface area= more photosynthesis. 3. Contain chlorophyll. 4. Thin membrane = short diffusion time = increase rate of photosynthesis.
4 of 15
where does photosynthesis occur?
in the chloroplasts.
5 of 15
what are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Light intensity, Carbon dioxide concentration, and temperature.
6 of 15
How is temperature a limiting factor?
the optimum temperature for the plants to photosynthesise at is around 35 degrees. However, once the temperature goes any higher than this, the active site of the enzymes is denatured, and the reaction will stop.
7 of 15
What is the equation for light intensity as a limiting factor?
light intensity = 1/distance2
8 of 15
Name three uses of glucose.
1. For respiration. 2. Makes amino acids. 3. Builds up lipids.
9 of 15
Describe the Test for Starch.
1) take one leaf from each plant (dark/light) and place them in seperate 1/2 filled test tubes of ethanol. 2) place the test tube in a beaker of hot water. 3) after 5 minutes move this to boiling water. 4) take out and wash + add iodine.
10 of 15
Describe the colour changes if starch is/ is not present.
if present: orange --> blue-black if not present: orange --> orange
11 of 15
How can greenhouses help someone control the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
For light intensity they can have blinds and artifical lamps. For CO2, they can use fans, paraffin heater and burn fuel. And for temperature they can have heaters/air con.

What is hydroponics?
growing plants without soil
13 of 15
What are the benefits of using hydroponics?
1. less pests. 2. increase in yield. 3. good if soil is usually poor in nutrients.
14 of 15
What are the problems of using hydroponics?
1. very expensive. 2. no anchors on the plants (very weak).
