Photosynthesis

?
What is Photosynthesis?
The chemical reaction in the leaf where the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts absorb solar energy and store it in a new product called glucose which is made by reacting CO2 with H2O.
1 of 25
What are the products of Photosynthesis?
Glucose
2 of 25
what are the waste products of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
3 of 25
What is the symbol equation for photosynethsis?
6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2
4 of 25
What is need in order for this reaction to take place?
Energy from the sun, Chlorophyll
5 of 25
What is the first layer of the leaf? And what is its job?
Cuticle, Used to reduce transpiration
6 of 25
What is the second layer of the leaf? And what is its job?
Upper epidermis, Acts as a shield to stop the palisade layer from being damaged.
7 of 25
What is the 3rd layer? And what is its job?
Palisade layer (mesophyll), where the most photosynthesis takes place as it has the most chloroplasts
8 of 25
What is the 4th layer? And what is its job?
Spongy layer (mesophyll), allows small air gaps between cells in order for gas exchange to take place
9 of 25
What it the 5th layer? And what is its job?
Lower epidermis, CO2 diffuses from the air into the spongy layer, water evaporates for the process of transpiration, oxygen is let back into the air
10 of 25
Where is Glucose stored in a palisade cell?
Vacuole
11 of 25
How is the leaf designed?
To maximize photosynthesis activity
12 of 25
What cell is in the lower epidermis?
Guard cells
13 of 25
What it glucose transferred into? And why?
Starch, to balance Osmosis as it is insoluble and glucose isn't.
14 of 25
What is the job of the xylem vessel?
To carry water from the root to the leaf
15 of 25
What is the job of the Phloem vessel?
Carries glucose solution from the leaf to other parts of the plant (TRANSLOCATION)
16 of 25
what is evidence for translocation?
Use an Isotope of Carbon and a xray to see if the radioactive carbon has spread
17 of 25
How can you test for photosynthesis?
By the presence of starch
18 of 25
How do you test for starch?
Use Iodine
19 of 25
What colours does Iodine change from in the presence of starch?
Brown to blue black
20 of 25
What can the starch test prove?
That photosynthesis needs light, CO2 and chlorophyll
21 of 25
How can we test for oxygen as a waste product?
Use a heavy Isotope of water
22 of 25
What is a qualitative test?
Used to see weather it works or not
23 of 25
What is a quantitative test?
A test to see how much of something happens to calculate the rate of how good something is
24 of 25
List 3 factors that effect photosynthesis!
1. Light 2. temperature 3. CO2 concentration
