Did some research into phonological errors to determine whether they were linked to child’s understanding of the words.

What did they find?
The fish/fs theory: Children who referred to a plastic inflatable fish as ‘fis’ substituting the ‘s’ for the ‘sh’. Couldn’t link an adults use of ‘fis’ with the same object.

What can the child do?
The child can understand the word but can’t say it until they are ready.

Developing Lexis
Once children able to produce souns effectively they can form real words. By 1st word stage (12months) children already contracted sounds to their main language. Protowords = have meaning for children and caregivers but less effective with others.
