What is substance Dualism?
Descartes - Two distinct substances, the mind and body. Mental states are non - physical states of a non - physical substance (the mind)

what is Predicate Dualism?
Mental events are physical events but we need two languages. Folk Psychology and science, to describe mental events. These languages have different meanings but refer to the same thing ( different referent)

What is Property Dualism?
Theres only one kind of stuff in the world (matter) but certain arraignments of matter e.g. subvert brain processes, give rise to a second kind of property e.g supervient mental states. Mental states are non- physical states of a physical substance.

Arguments for substance Dualism?
Descartes argument of conceivability - it is conceivable that ones mind might exist, without a body. Conceivability means possibility, so it is possible that ones mind might exist without being embodied, hence ones mind is different from ones body.

Argument for property dualism?
P(zombies) it is conceivable that there are physical bodies like mine that exist without any conscious states. Conceivability implies possibility so it is possible that like my own physical body one could exist without being minded. E.g P(zombies)

What are the further threes arguments for dualism?
Privacy and privileged access, Qualia, Intentionality.

What is the privileged access argument?
features of mental states that are not possessed by physical ones. I can know immediately that I want to go to amsterdam in summer through introspection while others can only infer through my behaviour.

What is the Qualia argument?
The subjective aspect of our experience of the world, what it is like to be in pain,love,desire something. These mental properties are subjective and cannot be reduced to physical ones.

What did Nagel say about Qualia?
Nagel used the phrase 'it is like to be..' he argues that we can know all the physical properties of a bat but not know what it is like to be a bat.

What is the intentionality argument?
Intentionality is that some mental states are directed/about something while physical states are not. Mental states are directed towards an object/relation/content wheres as physical states possess these features.

What is the Brentano thesis?
this is a distinguishing feature, the hallmark of mental, unlike physical states, mental states are about something.
