The personnel or Human Resources department of a business deals with the recruitment, induction, training and disciplining of employees.
It carries out the necessary procedures when an employee departs, manages holiday, maternity or other special forms of leave and monitors absence.

The personnel department needs to keep records of a range of data relating to current employees that can include their personal histories, skills, capabilities and salary. Some systems can hold scanned images, such as application forms, car licences.
Appraisals and review dates are also recorded. The recording of all absence, together with the reasons for absence, is necessary both to monitor individuals and highlight difficulties that they might have and to pick up problems in organisations
