What is periodicity?
The trends that occur across periods(across rows)
1 of 14
What are elemets ordered by?
Elements are ordered by proton number
2 of 14
What happens or atomic radius as you go across a period ?
The atomic radius decreases across a period
3 of 14
Why does this happen?
As numbers of protons increases the positive charge of nucleus increases. This means electrons are pulled closer to the nucleus making the atomic radius smaller
4 of 14
What happens to the extra electrons that the elements gain
Extra electrons that the elements gain across a period are added to the outer energy leve, therefore don't really provide any effects on shielding
5 of 14
What Is shielding mainly provided by
Shielding is mainly provided by electrons in the inner shells
6 of 14
What is melting point related to
The bond strength and structure of elements
7 of 14
Explain melting point of first 3 elements in period 3
First 3 elects are metals therefore have metallic bonding. General increase in melting point as metal ions have an increasing positive charge, increasing numb of delocalised electrons and smaller ionic radius This means stronger metallic binds
8 of 14
Explain. Melting point of silicon
Silicon has a giant covalent structure(macro molecular) thus has strong covalent bonds which require lots of energy to be overcome . THERFORE HIGHEST MELTING POINT INPERIOD 3
9 of 14
Explain Phoosphorus melting point?
P4 Lower melting point than silicon as has a weak simple molecules structure, weaker van dear awake forces
10 of 14
Explain Sukrfur melting point?
S8 higher melting point that phosphorus as consist of more molecules in the simple molecular structure therefore is larger structure and has stronger van ded waal forces
11 of 14
What do more atoms in a molecule mean?
Means stronger van dear waal forces
12 of 14
What happens to ionisation energy across a period
Ionisation energy generally increases across a period
13 of 14
What is ionisation energy
Minimum amount of energy required to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of atoms in gaseous state
