Name the 4 types of orbitals?
S ,P , D, F.
1 of 12
Where are the periods placed?
Across the periodic table, Groups are down.
2 of 12
What happens to atomic radius across a period?
Decreases due to the increase in protons which creates a stronger attraction between the nucleus and the outer shell electrons which are in the same shell (with similar shielding).
3 of 12
What happens to ionisation energy across the period?
Generally, it increases due to the increasing number of protons as the electrons
4 of 12
How many drops are there and why do they occur?
There are two drops, one between Mg and Al and one with P and S. Mg has its electrons in the 3s sub shell whereas Al is starting to to fill the 3p shell. Al electron is easier to remove as it is higher in energy
5 of 12
Why is there a drop between P and S?
Sulphurs outer electron is paired with anither electron in the 3p orbital. This causes a repulsuion between the electrons making the second electron easier to remove.

Na, Mg and Al have metallic bonding. Describe the mp and bp.
It has strong bonding as the stronger the electrons in the outer shell that are released to the sea of elctrons. A small positive centre also makes the bonding stronger. Lots of energy is needed to overcome this.

Si is macromolecular. What is meant by macromolecular and why does it have a high mp and bp?
Macromolecular is giant covalent structures. It has many covalent bonds which require large amounts of energy to overcome these bonds so t has a high mp and bp.
8 of 12
What bonding is present in simple molecules such as Cl2 ?
Weak Van der Waals so little energy is required to break them so they haver a low mp and bp.
9 of 12
Ar is....?
Monoatomic so weak VDW
10 of 12
Why does S8 have a higher mp than P4?
S8 has more electrons so there is stronger VDW between molecules.

In period 2.....
Li,Be metallic bonding (high mp) B,C macromolecular (very high mp) N2 ,O2 molecular (gases! Low mp as small v der w) Ne monoatomic gas (very low mp)
