Each side of the Periodic Table
The center is called the Transition Metals. The far right is called the non- metal.
1 of 12
An atom.
An atom has a tiny nucleus and its center surrounding by elements. All substances are made up of atoms
2 of 12
Elements and Compounds
Elements contain one type of atom. Compounds contain more then one type of atom. A compound is made of atoms of two or more different elements, bonded together.
3 of 12
Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
Protons and neutrons are in the center of an atom called the nucleus. Protons- positive charge(+) Electrons-Negative charge(-) Neutrons-No Charge
4 of 12
Ions
Atoms have the same amount of electrons and neutrons but they can gain or lose electrons. If an atom gains an electron it gets a negative charge. If an atom loses an electron it gets a positive charge.
5 of 12
Isotopes
Atoms of the same elements always have the same number of protons. However they don't always have the same number of neutrons.
6 of 12
Mass and atomic numbers
Mass Number:number of protons plus protons Atomic Number: Number of protons
7 of 12
Electron Shells
Electrons orbit the nucleus in shells the shells are at different energy levels. The closer they are to the nucleus the lower the energy level. The first shell has the lowest energy.
8 of 12
Important Equation
word equation=alkali metal + Water- AM hydroxide + hydrogen
9 of 12
alkali metals
Highest-Potassium Middle-Sodium Lowest- Lithium
10 of 12
Periodic table
As u go down the table the size of the atom gets bigger. In a metal this means that the electron in an atom is easier to take away and this is what makes it reactive.
11 of 12
Other info
Alkali metals form positive ions with charge of +1. They react to form ionic compounds which are generally white solids which dissolve in water to make colourless solutions.
