Performance enhancing drugs

?
What are prohibited substances or PEDS ?
Chemical substances that, when introduced into the body, alter the biochemical balance in the body. They can affect a performer's ability and may give them an unfair advantage when competing.
1 of 29
What are the 3 groups that PEDS can be divided into?
Substances that are prohibited, Methods that are prohibited, Legally prescribed drugs
2 of 29
What drugs are included in substances that are prohibited ?
stimulants, narcotic analgesics, anabolic agents, peptide hormones and diuretics
3 of 29
What drugs are included in methods that are prohibited ?
Blood doping
4 of 29
What drugs are included in legally prescribed drugs ?
Beta blockers

What is the acronym for the 7 PEDS ?
Some People Believe Drugs Are Not Bad

What are the advantages of stimulants ?
Stimulants affect the CNS, increasing mental and physical alertness and reducing fatigue. They have been used by cyclists in long- distance events to help them maintain focus and perform at their optimal level.
7 of 29
What are the disadvantages of stimulants ?
Increased risk of: headaches, HBP, stroke, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, tremors. They can: be addictive -overdose can kill you, mask the sign of serious injuries which can worsen as a result, cause poor judgement which can lead to accidents
8 of 29
What are the advantages of narcotic analgesics ?
Narcotic analgesics such as morphine, reduce the feeling of pain. They can mask the pain of overtraining, allowing performers in a wide range of sports to gain an unfair advantage by being able to train harder than their competitors.
9 of 29
What are the disadvantages of narcotic analgesics ?
Respiratory depression- slowing down breathing and therefore gaseous exchange, increased pain threshold may lead to further injury or exhaustion due to over training, increased risk of constipation and apathy, addictive
10 of 29
What are the advantages of anabolic agents ?
Promote muscle and bone growth and reduce recovery time so performers can train harder and more frequently. Used by performers who need strength, muscular endurance and power such as sprinters and weightlifters
11 of 29
What are the disadvantages of anabolic agents ?
Increased risk of :liver cancer, organ damage, infertility, injury especially tearing your tendons, hair loss, acne, HBP, heart attack, heart disease, enlarged breasts in men and facial hair in women, increasing aggressive behaviour and depression
12 of 29
What are the advantages of peptide hormones?
Increases the RBC count and therefore the oxygen- carrying capacity of the blood which improves a players aerobic capacity. It means they can perform longer before fatigue sets in and their recovery time is shorter. Therefore used by endurance athlet
13 of 29
What are the disadvantages of peptide hormones ?
Blood becomes more viscous (thicker), Increased risk of :heart attack, embolism causing a blood vessel to block, stroke
14 of 29
What are the advantages of Diuretic drugs ?
Increases the rate of urination to remove fluid from the body, helps lose weight quickly (for weight sports), referred to making agents as they help reduce the concentration of other prohibited substances in performer's urine by excreting it faster
15 of 29
What are the disadvantages of diuretic drugs ?
Increased risk of : dehydration, kidney failure, heart failure, muscle cramps, headaches, dizziness
16 of 29
What are the advantages of blood doping ?
Increases the RBC count and therefore the oxygen- carrying capacity of the blood which improves a players aerobic capacity. It means they can perform longer before fatigue sets in and their recovery time is shorter. Therefore used by endurance athlet
17 of 29
What are the disadvantages of blood doping ?
Blood becomes viscous (thicker), Increased risk of: heart attack, infection, embolism causing a blood vessel to block, stroke
18 of 29
What are the advantages of beta blockers ?
Reduces: heart rate , muscle tension, blood pressure, effects of adrenaline. Improves fine motor control and preciseness. Steady the nerves and have a calming and relaxing effect
19 of 29
What are the disadvantages of beta blockers ?
nausea, tiredness and weakness, increased risk of heart problems
20 of 29
What is adrenaline?
A natural hormone that is released by the body to speed up heart rateWhat
21 of 29
What are stimulants ?
prohibited drugs that have an affect on the CNS, increasing mental and physical alertness
22 of 29
What are narcotic analgesics ?
prohibited drugs that reduce the feeling of pain
23 of 29
What are anabolic steroids ?
artificially produced hormones that mimic testosterone and are prohibited. They promote muscle and bone growth and reduce recovery time
24 of 29
What are peptide hormones ?
prohibited drugs that stimulate the production of naturally occurring hormones. EPO is a peptide hormone
25 of 29
What is Erythropoietin (EPO) ?
a peptide hormone that increases the RBC count and therefore the oxygen- carry capacity of the blood
26 of 29
What are diuretic drugs ?
prohibited drugs that remove fluid from the body by increasing the rate of urination
27 of 29
What is blood doping ?
a prohibited method that involves removing blood a few weeks before competition and then re -injecting it prior to competition. Increases the RBC in the bloodstream, increasing the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity
28 of 29
What are beta blockers ?
restricted drugs that steady the nerves by controlling the heart rate. They have a calming and relaxing effect
