What was the aim of Pennington and Hastie's study?
To investigate whether or not story evidence summaries are true causes of the final verdict decisions and the extent to which story order affects confidence in those decisions.

Who were the participants in this study?
130 students from Northwestern and Chicago university. Paid for their participation in a 1 hour experiment. Allocated to 1 of 4 groups of roughly equal sizes.

What was the main procedure for the participants?
To listen to a tape recording of the stimulus and trial and then respond to written questions.

How were participants separated and what were the conditions?
All participants were separated by partitions and were not allowed to interact with each other.

How was evidence arranged in the story order conditions and the witness order conditions.
Evidence in the story-order conditions was arranged in its natural order. Evidence items in the witness-order condition were arranged in the order closest to the original trial.

What decision were participants told to make and what did they have to rate?
Participants were told to make either a guilty or not guilty verdict on a murder charge and then rate their confidence in their own decision on a scale of 1 to 5.
