What happens when we breath in?
We lower the air pressure in our lungs, therefore increaseing the volume of the lungs. Diagpram muscles contracts and flattens. Intercostal muscles contract and lift up ribcageincreasing the volume inside the chest cavity.

The amount of air moved in and out of the lungs in one minute.

How does diffusion happen in the alveoli?
Wall is semi permeable meaning it has holes in it large enough to allow the passage of oxygen and carbon molecules. The concentration of a gas is its partial presume, it is the pressure exerted in mixture of gases.

In the alvelio the partial pressure of oxygen us 100mmHg and in the blood from the heart now in the pulmonary capillaries is 40mmhg the difference in partial pressure sets up a diffusion gradient and oxygen molecules flow across the semi permeable

What are 4 factors that make diffusion of oxygen in the lungs into the blood efficient?
Short distance from alveoli to capillary, large surface area of alveoli , permeability of the alveoli and capillary cell walls.

Runner would require a lot,because it's the ability of cardiovascular systems to take in and transport oxygen to the working muscles when it can be utilized and aerobic performance maintained,

What factors effect a performers cardio respiratory endurance?
The efficiency of gaseous exchange, the effectiveness of oxygen transport from the lungs to he muscle cells, the ability of the muscles to utilize the oxygen they receive.

We might expect a performer with high cardio respiratory endurance to posses what?
A greater number and size of mitochondria which utilize the oxygen to provide energy, a greater proportion of slow oxidative muscle fibers, greater concentration of red blood cells which helps to transform oxygen to working muscles.

What are slow oxidative muske fibres?
Designed for endurance and are able to reduce a large amount of energy over a long period of time assuming oxygen is present.

The site of energy production under aerobic conditions when oxygen is present.

Seek to discover the performers vo2 max or maximal oxygen intake.this means the maximum amount of oxygen a person can take in, transport and utilize per min. Measured in kg/mm of oxygen kilogram of body weight.
