PE - blood vessels and the pulmonary & systemic circuits.

HideShow resource information
what is the pulmonary circuite
the circuite where blood flows from the heart, to the lungs and then back to the heart.
1 of 9
what is the systemic circuite
the circuit where blood travels from the heart to the rest of the body.
2 of 9
where do arteries take the boold and id the blood oxygenated or de-oxygenated ? is there any exceptions
carry blood from heart to the rest of the body. -- oxygenated blood. -- exeption = pulmonary arteries take de oxygenated blood back to the heart.
3 of 9
name 3 characteristics of the arteries.
thick and muscular walls -- elastic tissue to expand the vessel when the heart beats.
4 of 9
name 3 characteristics of the arterioles.
smaller then arteries -- layer of smooth muscle -- less elastic tissue than the arteries -- smooth muscle = expand and contract = control blood flow to tissue.
5 of 9
name 3 characteristics of the capillaries
one cell thick / thin walls -- large surface area for the diffusion of gasses -- pre capillary sphincters -- narrow diameter single blood cell / short diffusion pathway
6 of 9
name 2 characteristics of venules
smallest blood vessel -- contain some muscle cells -- thin walls
7 of 9
where do veins take the boold and id the blood oxygenated or de-oxygenated ? is there any exceptions
take blood back to the heart under low pressure -- carry de oxygenated -- exception = pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood to the heart from the lungs
8 of 9
name 3 characteristics of veins
thin walls with a large lumen (cross sectional area) -- contains pocket valves -- allows blood back to poll in them -- little elastic and muscle tissue -- muscles surrounding the muscles help push blood threw muscles
