What is disease?
A description of certain symptoms: mental, physical or both.

A malfunction of the body or mind which has an adverse effect on good health. Having mental, physical and social aspects.

When are microorganisms considered as pathogens?
When they gain entry to the host. Colonise the tissues of the host. Resist the defences of the host. Cause damage to the host tissues.

Pathogens.

When does disease occur?
When an infection leads to recognisable aymptoms in the host.

What is it called when a pathogen is transfered from one individual to another?
Transmission.

How do pathogens get into the body?
By penetrating one of the organism's interfaces with the environment e.g skin.

Invasion normally occurs when?
By cuts, abrasions and bites.

What is a common point of entry for microorganisms?
The gas-exchange system. Causing influenza, tuberculosis and bronchitis.

What is another common point of entry for microorganisms?
The digestive system. Food and water may carry pathogens into the stomach and small intestine (dysentery pathogens). Causing cholera and typhoid.

How does the body help prevent the entry of pathogens?
A mucous layer that covers exchange surfaces and forms a sticky barrier so it is hard for microorganisms to penetrate.

How else does the body help prevent the entry of pathogens?
The production of enzymes that break down the pathogens.

What other way does the body help prevent the entry of pathogens?
The production of stomach acid, which kills microorganisms.

How do pathogens cause disease?
By damaging host tissues.

By producing toxins.

By assessing how quickly the pathogen divides.
