When they gain entry to the host. Colonise the tissues of the host. Resist the defences of the host. Cause damage to the host tissues.

By cuts, abrasions and bites.

The gas-exchange system. Causing influenza, tuberculosis and bronchitis.

The digestive system. Food and water may carry pathogens into the stomach and small intestine (dysentery pathogens). Causing cholera and typhoid.

How does the body help prevent the entry of pathogens?
A mucous layer that covers exchange surfaces and forms a sticky barrier so it is hard for microorganisms to penetrate.

The production of enzymes that break down the pathogens.

The production of stomach acid, which kills microorganisms.
