What is a pathogen?
Microorganism that causes disease by infecting a host
1 of 16
Define disease
A disorder of structure or function that produces specific symptoms
2 of 16
For a microorganism to be considered a pathogen it must...
Gain entry to a host, colonise host tissue, resist host defences and damage host tissues
3 of 16
How are infectious diseases spread?
Transmission, direct and indirect contact, droplet, airborne, faecal oral, vectors (bites and scratches)
4 of 16
How do pathogens enter the body?
Skin- cuts Gas exchange system-get past mucus lining and cilia in lung epithelium to reach alveoli, droplets inhaled in air. Digestive system-pathogens on food/water reach stomach and small intestine (if not killed by stomach acid)
5 of 16
Host defences...
Skin, scabs, hairs (trap pathogens),tears, mucus, stomach acid, blood clotting
6 of 16
How do pathogens cause disease?
Toxins Damaging host tissues/cells-break membranes to release nutirents/replicates in cell and bursts it/ high no. prevents tissues functioning/viruses inhibit synthesis if dna, rna and protiens
7 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic- example of cell
Prokaryotic- bacteria eukaryotic-animal, plant, fungi
8 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic- size
Prokaryotic-smaller eukaryotic-larger
9 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-genetic material
Prokaryotic-loose, circular dna, NO NUCLEUS eukaryotic-dna in chromosomes in membrane bound nucleus
10 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-ribosomes
Prokaryotic-smaller
11 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-cell membranes
Prokaryotic- around cell eukaryotic-phosolipid bilayer around cell and organelles
12 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-photosynthetic membranes
Prokaryotic-in blue and green algae and photosynthsising bacteria eukaryotic-chloroplasts in plants
13 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-site of respiration
Prokaryotic- mesosome in folding of membrane eukaryotic-mitochondria
14 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-flagella
Prokaryotic-yes eukaryotic-no
15 of 16
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic-cell wall
Prokaryotic-yes (peptidoglycan) eukaryotic- only in plants and fungi
