Pathogen
micro organism that causes disease
1 of 12
Bacteria
reproduce rapidly, make toxins, smaller than plant or animal cells e.g. typhoid, cholera
2 of 12
Viruses
need to reproduce inside other cells, always damage cells and are much smaller than bacteria e.g. cold, measles
3 of 12
Infectious
pathogen can be passed by; droplet infection in the air, direct contact, a break in the skin, contaminated food or drink
4 of 12
Defence against infection
physical barriers- prevent pathogens getting in Chemical defences- kill pathogens before they harm us
5 of 12
White blood cells
ingest pathogens and destroy them. They produce antibodies to destroy particular pathogens and they also produce antitoxins that counteract the toxins released by pathogens
6 of 12
Antibiotics
work inside the body to kill bacteria that cause diseases by damaging the bacterial cells
7 of 12
painkillers
relieve symptoms not the pathogen
8 of 12
Resistance
some bacteria develop natural resistance to antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics can cause more resistance to develop antibiotics not used to treat non serious infections anymore
9 of 12
MRSA
multi resistant to many antibiotics therefore very difficult to treat
10 of 12
Vaccinations
given weak form of the pathogen. White blood cells produce antibodies. Pathogen is destroyed. If came across real pathogen WBCs can produce antibodies quickly
11 of 12
MMR
used to protect children against measles, mumps and rubella
