Parsons - functional fit theory
functions the family perform depend on the type of society in which it's found. society also determines family structure. two kinds of family structure; three generational extended and two generational nuclear.
1 of 8
three generational extended family
found in pre-industrial society. multi-functional-a unit of production and consumption.
2 of 8
two generational nuclear family
found in modern industrial society. fits two key needs of society; geographical mobility and social mobility
3 of 8
geographical mobility
industry constantly springs up and declines in different places. easier for compact nuclear family to move to where jobs are.
4 of 8
Social mobility
status in industrial society is achieved not ascribed so adult sons can gain higher status than their fathers. breaking away to set up their own family unit removes the status conflict this would cause.
5 of 8
the two essential functions of the family
primary socialisation and stabilisation of adult personalities.
6 of 8
