Parliament
A name given to the legislature in many countries. Has the dual role of legitimising proposed legislation and representing the people.

House of Commons
known as the 'lower house' and is the elected half of HOP.

House of Lords
Known as the upper house in HOP and is unelected, containing about 800 peers.

Confidence and Supply
An agreement between the governing party and a smaller party in which the latter agrees to support the government on key votes in return for policy concessions.

Salisbury Convention
The convention that the HOL do not block or try to wreck legislation that was in the manifesto of the governing party.

Parliamentary Privilege
An ancient principle that protects MP's from external pressure and specifically means they cannot be prosecuted or sued for anything they may say in the HOC. It also implies that the monarch can never interfere with the work of HOP.

Legislative Bill
A proposal presented to HOP for legislation. One passed in HOP a bill becomes an Act of Parliament.

Public Bill Committee
Set up by the HOC to examine the details of a particular bill.

Backbench MP's
MP's who are not senior members of their party and so sit in HOP behind the front bench.

Select Committees
A permanent committee of backbench MP's which has a specific task, mainly to call government to account, but other select committees have different parliamentary roles.

Opposition
The largest party in the HOC that is not the government. Their role is to question and scrutinise the work of the government.
