Sexual Selection - Intrasexual (Mate competition)
Members of one sex competing with each other for the opposite sex. The winners will be able to pass on the genes to the next generation and therefore survival of the fittest.
1 of 9
Intersexual (mate choice)
Involves the preference of one sex for members of the opposite sex who possess certain qualities. These preferences reveal traits that could be passed onto offspring (selection for good genes) as well as information about protection/support
2 of 9
Logic of mating
Random mating is stupid mating. It pays to be choosy, as the genetic quality of the male determines the genetic quality of the offspring.
3 of 9
Buss
Males can produce lots of sperm for much of their life, but females make a greater investment in offspring (few eggs in a restricted period of life, gestation and infant care).
4 of 9
Buss
Because of this females chose males that are able and/or willing to invest in their offspring. These males achieve higher reproductive success.
5 of 9
Short term mating preferences
Males are more likely to be promiscuous because the more femals they impregnate the more chances of reproductive success. Females are less likely to be promiscuous as they have higher investment than men.

Clarke and Hatfield-male and female experimenters asked strangers on a college campus asked 3 questions Date Come back to apartment Have sex
Females: 50% agreed to date, 6% to go back, none for sex Males: 50% agreed to date, 69% to go back, 75% for sex men evolved psychological mechanisms for short term. Gender bias- Buss shows advantage of short term mating only to males GENDER BIAS

Sex differences in parental investment - females (Trivers)
Females can only produce a limited number of offspring so it is more costly for females to have offspring. females invest more so are selective. also invest more in the rearing of the child, 9 months in womb, breastfeeding 2 years.
8 of 9
Male investment (Trivers)
Males invest less than women. however, there is difficulty for males in determining whether a child is their own, with there being a risk of cuckoldry, potentially raising a kid that isnt theirs.
