Define parasitism
A relationship between two organisms where only one organism benefits from the interaction but this is to the detriment (harm) of the other
1 of 17
Define mutualism
An interaction between organisms of different species, where both organisms benefit from the interaction
2 of 17
Define commensalism
An interaction between two organisms where only one organism benefits, but this is not to the detriment (harm) of the other
3 of 17
Define facultative parasite
A parasite which may survive in the absence of the host (eg. opportunistic pathogens)
4 of 17
Define obligate parasite
At some or all stages of life cycle the parasite cannot survive in the absence of the host
5 of 17
Define endoparasite
Parasites which live internally in the host
6 of 17
Define ectoparasite
Parasites which live on the outer surface of the host
7 of 17
Define definitive host
The host in which a parasite reaches maturity and sexual reproduction may occur
8 of 17
Define intermediate host
The host that harbors the parasite for a transition period
9 of 17
Define permissive host
A host not usually used by parasites but still allows life cycle completion
10 of 17
Define non-permissive host
A host in which the parasite cannot complete its life cycle
11 of 17
Define reservoir host
Temporary host used in the absence of the natural host
12 of 17
Define paratenic host
Host used for transport
13 of 17
Define biological vector
A vector needed by the parasite to complete part of its lifecycle
14 of 17
Define mechanical vector
A vector which mechanically spreads the parasite but is not used in the parasite's life cycle
15 of 17
Define direct life cycle
Parasitic stages occur in/on only one host
16 of 17
Define indirect lifecycle
An intermediate host is needed for the development of some stages of the parasite
