What did Milgram want to see?
wanted to see whether people would obey orders even if the consequences were severest let people think they were giving another person an electric shock.

What happened at 300V?what was then given
the learner banged on the wall complaining of heart problems. Four verbal prompts were still given such as please continue.

Results of Milgram's experiment
65% continued to 450V, 100% went to 300V, many pp showed signs of nervousness and shacking/sweating. follow up questionnaire 84% said pleased they had taken part

Social influence is strong and people obey orders even when it causes them distress.

What are features they may have led to obedience?
Yale University is a prestigious environment, payed $4.50, volunteered , went up in small increments, 4 prods and reassured there would be no tissue damage.

Good controls; four prompts meant cause and effect conclusions can be drawn. Milgram was competent, he debriefed pp and they were told once they could withdraw

study was unethical as pp deceived.lacks ecological and experimental validity. lacks generalisability.

How can the findings be applied to real life?
demonstrates how easy it is to follow destructive obedience and this knowledge can avoid incidents in the future. change the way the US military train their soldiers
