What is an Epidural?
When you have an Epidural, a Fine Plastic Tube is Placed into the Lower Part of the Spine and Liquis Anaesthetic is put into This. It Stops all Pain Quickly by Blocking the Nerves that Send Messages to the Brain. The Mother is Numb from the Waist.

They Must be Administered by an Anaesthetist, So They Can Only be Given in Hospital, Often the Mother Doesn't Know When to Push because she Can't Feel Contractions, They May Cause Headache and Backache After Birth, They may Increase Lenght of Labour.

Is a Drug that is Injected into a Deep Muscle in the Leg or Bottom to Relieve Pain.

The Baby Maybe Drowsy and Slower to Breathe as the Drug Crosses the Placenta, The Mother Can Feel Disoriented and That She Lacks Control, Its Takes About 20 Minutes to Take Effect.

What is Entonox?
Gas and Air is a Mixture of Nitrous Oxde and Oxygen. Its Inhaled Through a Mask or a Mouthpiece, which is Controlled by the Mother. It isn't Harmful to the Baby.

Name Some Disadvantages to Entonox?
It Must be used as soon as any Discomfort from a Contraction is Felt because it takes 15 Seconds to have Any Effect and 35 Seconds to have Maximum Effect, The Effect Wears Off Quickly, The Pain isnt Completely Removed, The Mother May Feel Sick.

What is a TENS Machine?
A Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator Machine Has 4 Flat Pads Containing Electrodes, which are Attached to the Mothers Back. When she feels Pain she sends Electrical Impulses to her Back through a Hand Held Control. This Releasing Endorphins.

Name Some Disadvantages of TENS Machines?
They Can't be Used in Water Births, The Mother Can't Shower or Bathe During Labour and They Don't Work if the Pain is Intense. They are Most Effected in Stage 1 Labour.

What is a Water Birth?
Is where Birth Takes Place in a Pool, which looks like a Large Bath of Paddling Pool. The Water is Kept at a Constant Temperature of 37c.

Name Some Disadvantages of Water Births?
Can be Difficult to Set Up and Maintain Temperature at Home, They can't be Used with Pethidine or Epidurals and They are Only Suitable for Normal, Low Risk Pregnancies.

Controlled Breathing and Massage, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Aromatheraphy and Reflexology. However they aren't always Effective and Need to be done by a Qualifed Person.
